October 27th, 2018 – Charleston, SC Kennesaw State University brought their 6-1 record (2-0 in the Big South) to Buccaneer Field to battle their Big South rival the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Charleston Southern came into the day 3-3 with a 1-0 Big South record.
Kennesaw State was led by their starting quarterback Chandler Burks who changed up his normal routine and took to the air. The Owls QB was 11-18 in the air for 192-yards passing that included two TDs. The beneficiaries of this air attack were Justin Sumpter and Darnell Holland who both had first-half touchdowns. Holland also had a great game as a running back.
Darnell led the Owls with 83-yards that included three touchdowns on the ground. Add Hollands receiving TD in the first half and he finished the night with four scores. Which was impressive on it’s own. However, the Owls defense really stepped up tonight and made the Bucs look like they were stuck in the mud.
The defense was led by the usual suspects, Bryson Armstrong, Andrew Butcher and McKenzie Billingslea. The Owls smothered the Bucs to the tune of 123-0rushing yards and 63-passing yards on the night. The Bucs defense wasn’t as sharp as they gave up 192-yards in the air and 316 on the ground to the #2 ranked Owls.
With this win the Owls are a solid 7-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Big South which puts them in the drivers seat in the conference. The Owls have also outscored opponents 355 to 80 so far this season.
Next up the Owls will take on the Campbell Camels for the last home game at Fifth/Third Bank Stadium. Kick off is at 2pm and will air on ESPN+.
- Chandler Burks moved up to a tie for 2nd place all time for Big South rushing touchdowns for a career. He is tied with Anudres Perkens of Coastal Carolina (2003-06) with 46 scores. He trails only Miguel Maysonet of Stony Brook who had 48 (2010-12)
- Owls had over 500-yards of offense on the night.
